Clinton 4-0
On any normal day you’d find a Jeep on 40’s breezing by the Rubicon, yet there’s something even more special about seeing a Toyota doing the same. Sure the Jeep will have a solid axle up front, but what if it didn’t -could it still pass the Soup Bowl? Better yet, what if it was a Toyota with IFS -could that possibly pass one of the toughest obstacles at Rubicon? Well, here you have it, the answer to it all. Clinton’s 5th gen Toyota 4runner on 40 inch tires running through the ‘con with ease and still retains its independent front suspension!
In a world where the easy choice is to do a solid axle swap, Clinton chose to test the limits of the Yota, just to see how much he could possibly achieve with this setup. And a lot he has conquered. In 2022 it seemed every time I would check my Instagram feed I’d see Clinton at a different trail. The man was really out there and doin’ it, and I don’t blame him as I would be too if I had his rig.
This isn’t your run-of-the-mill overland rig with 50 different accessories hanging off the side. This rig is different, it was built with practicality and purpose. There’s nothing on the runner that doesn’t need to be on there. This was the direct result of weight savings in mind to reduce stress on all the moving components.
My favorite (and Clinton’s too) mod on the rig definitely has to be the Trail-Gear Crawl Box. Dual transfer case setups are common for older rock crawlers, but fairly rare to see it in a newer (current) generation vehicle like Clinton’s. The ability to have regulated speed and torque at super low gears truly is a “cheat code” in the crawling world.
All in all, I had a blast taking a deep dive into this infamous rig. I thank Clinton for the opportunity and also applaud him for his achievements and for just simply really being out there doin’ it.
